Blackfriars is an award-winning restaurant and bar located in a 13th-century medieval friary in the heart of Newcastle.
With its Dominican origins dating back to 1239, and a long and turbulent history that included a spell as a hostel for King Henry III, as a former inner-city monastery, Blackfriars is undeniably unique. The restaurant, which now occupies the oldest dining room in the UK, serves guests fantastic-British cooking with local seasonal produce which earnt it the title Taste of England by the North East England Tourism Awards.
A recent addition is the popular Parlour Bar which is open from 11am until midnight serving coffee, bar snacks and drinks. The bar used to be the waiting room for the friars so is the oldest bar in Newcastle.
Blackfriars is open for lunch and dinner every day and throughout the week offers a fantastic value lunchtime menu, early evening set menu and award-winning à la carte menu.
Located next to the main restaurant Blackfriars’ ornate medieval Banquet Hall has been brought back to life following years of painstaking and meticulous research and restoration and is the perfect venue for corporate events, networking groups, functions, wine tastings, educational visits, private parties, anniversaries and weddings. You could even have your own medieval banquet in the hall.
Located above the restaurant, Blackfriars Cookery School runs more than 300 events per year including bread making kids’ cookery workshops, dinner party cooking and team building sessions as well as corporate and private dining and the new Tasting Room can be used for wine, beer and whisky tasting sessions.
Blackfriars was voted as having the best Sunday lunch in Newcastle by readers of the Independent! Enjoy a cracking Sunday lunch in the oldest purpose-built restaurant in the UK, right in the centre of Newcastle!
Blackfriars hosts a number of other popular events throughout the year including medieval banquets, food and beer matching, whisky dinners and chocolate dinners – see www.blackfriarsrestaurant.co.uk for details or to book online.
